Cultural Organizations
There are a variety of organizations, both international and
regional, that are dedicated to the preservation of cultural
patrimony. Such agencies may provide funding, technical support and
training.
- International Sources:
- United
Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO): This organization funds many cultural heritage
programs along with its offshoot, ICCROM.
- International Centre for the
Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property
(ICCROM): ICCROM was created by UNESCO to specifically address
the conservation of cultural property. Web pages can be accessed in
both English and French.
- Organization
of American States (OAS): Programa Regional de Desarrollo
Cultural: The OAS works to protect cultural property in its
member states, including library and archive materials.

- International
Federation of Library Associations (IFLA): Core Programme for the
Advancement of Librarianship in the Third World: This subunit of
IFLA funds training and education projects internationally.
- Institutes
and Organizations Working in the Preservation Field: Mainly for
Europe, but displays some international focus.
- Roerich
Pact: An agreement between American nations on the protection
of artistic, historical and scientific institutions.
- Cuenca
Declaration: International pact on curbing the illegal traffic
of cultural property.
Regional Sources:
- Comissão de
Patrimônio Cultural: This program, out Universidade de
São Paulo, promotes the conservation and identification of
cultural property. The University also maintains a database on
cultural patrimony. In Portuguese.
- Artes e Historia:
Still under construction, this Mexican source is developing sections
on "restauración" and "bibliotecas y liberías."
- Getty Foundation: Located
in Santa Monica, California, USA, the Getty Institute provides funds
for the training of Latin American conservators, as well as for
conservation projects in Latin America.
