Subject: Rumours: Conservation Information Network
All of the following is rumour and should be treated accordingly: Rumour has it that the move to divorce CIN from the Envoy 100 electronic mail system is coming about earlier than expected. The Steering Committee would like to see a new, CIN-run email system in place by April, but insiders are betting on September. The system is likely to be run under Unix on the computer that serves as the front end for the Ottawa mainframe (a move I heartily endorse). This should allow the system to run quickly, efficiently and, probably, inexpensively. A connection to NetNorth (the Canadian component of Bitnet) also seems likely. Other changes, making the database system a tad more friendly, are in the works. A new version of the operating system for the CHIN's Cyber mainframe (NOS VE) will allow database commands to be entered in upper or lower case, and the SCAN command will now work properly (up to now it has not handled upper/lower case text well). *** Conservation DistList Instance 2:10 Distributed: Tuesday, February 21, 1989 Message Id: cdl-2-10-002 ***Received on Tuesday, 21 February, 1989
