Subject: Commercial binding problem
Due to the North Carolina state bid system, we are currently compelled to deal exclusively with Heckman Bindery in Indiana for commercial binding. A rather surprising and aggravating problem has recently come to my attention, that is, their practice of using binding slips that are adhered to the volume with a sort of "post-it note" type adhesive. Because of pressure, heat, or other unspecified tortures to which the books are subjected, many of our volumes are returning with the tear-off stubs of the binding slip quite permanently adhered to the first leaf of the volume--sometimes (often?) over text. Our request that the slips not be "stuck" to the books has been refused, though they do acknowledge that it is not appropriate to cover text (amazing...). Since neither of our two previous binders found it necessary to adhere the binding slip to keep it with the volume, the library is having a hard time accepting this practice. The Library Administration is considering filing a formal vendor complaint with the state purchasing office (no real help to the books). In the meantime, we would be interested to know if other libraries have or have had this problem with Heckman or other library binderies (if so, which ones?). Any comments, sob stories, tales of success, etc. are welcomed. Thanks. *** Conservation DistList Instance 4:18 Distributed: Tuesday, October 9, 1990 Message Id: cdl-4-18-002 ***Received on Saturday, 6 October, 1990
