Heckman binding slips

From: Lorraine Rutherford <olley>
Date: Wednesday, January 2, 1991
The Heckman Customer Council met in early December, and at that meeting
I raised the issue of binding slips adhering to the covers of bound
materials. Stan Singpiel, who is in charge of production at Heckman,
said that it is necessary to adhere the slip to the text block, since it
is the identifier that matches the volume to the cover at the end of the
binding process. He pointed out that the adhesive strip is thinner than
in the past, and noted that Heckman has been experimenting with various
adhesives. They are also investigating tipping the corner of the slip
with adhesive, rather than using a strip. He indicated that Heckman is
willing to look into special arrangements with any of its customers for
whom the adhesive strips are a problem.

Stan also distributed statistics that may be of interest to this group,
concerning leaf attachment. Oversewing has dropped from 44% in 1988 to
approximately 22% in 1990, and adhesive binding has risen from 23% in
1988 to approximately 44% in 1990. There has also been a 2% rise in the
number of recases.
