Subject: Fungicides for carpet
I would very much appreciate receiving advice or recommendations about the following matter: On Jan. 23 a fire sprinkler pipe broke in the ceiling over our Physics LIbrary and a tremendous volume of water inundated our Library. Fortunately, none of the water directly impinged directly on any of the stacks or we would have had a real catastrophe, however, some 90% of the carpeted floor space was literally awash in water by the time we got the flow stopped. Most of the excess water was removed within several hours of the break via the use of portable vacuum cleaners. Then we called in a specialist firm (Moisture Control Co.) to bring in portable dehumidifiers to suck out most of the remaining water from carpeting and walls, etc. By now the carpeting is fairly well dried out, but it needs to be shampooed and cleaned, and we were wondering about the advisability of using some sort of antimildewcide in the shampoo. Can anyone advise me as to whether we should indeed use a mildewcide on the carpeting, and if so, what commercial brand would you recommend? I am particularly concerned that any such antimildewcide not pose any health hazards to people who work in and use this library. Would appreciate your comments ASAP. Howard M.
