Subject: Deacidification
Re: Peter Verheyen's query on deacidified paper, he (and others interested) should read Daniel, Flieder and LeClerc's article "The effects of pollution on deacidified paper" Restaurator 11 (3): 179-207 (1990), which demonstrates that deacidified book papers, having once been acidic, return to an acid condition fairly rapidly if stored in sufficiently polluted environments, despite the presence of an alkaline buffer. Their research suggests, in fact, that the greater the % buffer, the more pollution the deacidified paper can/will absorb. Very interesting and important research for all of us.
