Subject: Fire protection--Halon substitute
The following has been lifted (without permission) from LIBPLN-L Date: 25 Mar 91 Sender: University Library Planning Discussion <LIBPLN-L%QUCDN.BITNET [at] Forsythe__Stanford__EDU> From: rhellis%KEAN.UCS.MUN.CA [at] Forsythe__Stanford__EDU Subject: Fire Protection (Halon Substitute) Dupont is indeed working on an alternative to Halon 1301. In fact it is working on several alternatives as Halon 1301 has several applications. The alternative for room protection systems such as libraries use (as opposed to portable units) is called the "total flooding alternative" and has a working title of FE 25. [FE = Fire Extinguisher; a name contest is in order] FE 25 is thought to be about three years from the market. Questions about the compatibility of FE25 with present systems cannot be answered definitively at this time, but the matter is obviously a concern of the developer.
