Book drops

Syracuse University Library is just about to undergo a physical
reconfiguration of its main library.  Our director would like to use
this period of change (both physical and organizational) to institute
the elimination of bookdrops (in the main library as well as in the
branch libraries).   My question:  have any of you eliminated bookdrops
from your book return operation?  If so, what was your strategy for
selling this change to your user community?  What have been the
repercussions (positive/negative/both), if any?
