Subject: Moving old books
I don't know if this is appropriate, but I saw this question on the Library Administration and Management list server and thought it should be addressed by members of the Conservation list. **** Moderator's comments: If anyone feels public spirited, please respond directly to mjensen [at] charlie__usd__edu rather than to the DistList Deana L. Part of what we will probably move is some very old materials, 18th and 19th century. Most of these books are very dusty. The leather on the covers of many of them crumble at the touch. We would like to clean and dust them as much as is safe as part of the shifting. Should we attempt to dust them? If so how? Would it be safe to use the gentle vacuum cleaner we have that is especially designed for delicate electronic stuff? If we dust by hand, what type of cloths should we use? We would appreciate any advice we can get. *** Conservation DistList Instance 4:54 Distributed: Friday, April 12, 1991 Message Id: cdl-4-54-010 ***Received on Monday, 8 April, 1991
