ARL has not developed guidelines for cataloging photocopies. Dissemination of bibliographic records for microforms is considered essential in order to prevent duplicate filming efforts. Hopefully libraries will obtain service copies from the holder of the master microform and use their monies to film something else. Since photocopies do not have this resource-sharing potential, they were judged to be beyond the scope of the ARL guidelines. Nonetheless it may be useful to know that a preservation photocopy exists. OCLC is investigating "unmasking" the 583 field (for formats other than AMC) so that libraries can share such information with other OCLC libraries. I am thrilled to learn that you are actually using the ARL guidelines for microforms.
