Subject: Flush binding
I also was pleased to see not only Pete Jermann's but also Richard Frieder's comments on elimination of the bottom square, or binding "flush tail". When I first learned about flush tail, I immediately liked and accepted the concept, because it seemed to me to be eminently practical, sensible, and correct. The historical perspective reinforces that. I was surprised then when, in expressing my enthusiasm for flush tail, I found not only that there is little interest, but also that this is a somewhat controversial issue! This continues to puzzle me, and I would be very interested to hear all the rationale against binding flush. At the Newberry, all volumes currently sent for commercial binding are bound flush. Our in-house Bindery is also doing a test batch to determine how our routines would change for processing volumes bound flush. --Joan ten Hoor, Preservation Librarian, Newberry Library *** Conservation DistList Instance 4:56 Distributed: Sunday, April 28, 1991 Message Id: cdl-4-56-007 ***Received on Wednesday, 24 April, 1991
