Subject: Stamping inks
At NLM we are discussing methods to increase security of the collection. One proposal is to edge stamp all three edges of volumes with a property stamp which contains the full text "National Library of Medicine". There have been questions about what type of stamp and ink should be used to avoid feathering into the page. Are there inks which are better for this type of use than others which may also be available and advertised for adding property stamps? The other question that comes to mind about this activity is the range of sizes required for the stamps. Can we get by with two sizes -- very narrow and standard? How narrow can the stamp be to be useful. As far as I can tell the proposal includes unbound serial issues which are the most frequently stolen pieces. Now, are there good arguments against doing this and what kind of alternatives would folks suggest. We do have security devices inside the volumes.
