Connie Brooks Preservation Department Chief Stanford University Libraries Stanford, CA 94305-6004 Position Title: Preservation Administration Intern The Stanford University Libraries has received funds from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to offer a preservation administration internship of eleven months duration in the Preservation Department of the Libraries. The purpose of the internship is to give qualified candidates the opportunity to apply administrative skills in preservation in the setting of a large research library. These skills will be directed toward specific preservation administration projects, treatment projects and broader administrative activities. Classification: Assistant Librarian Beginning Salary Range: $28,872-$36,708. Apply Before: September 30, 1991 Appointment Date and Term: Position available as of November 1, 1991 and for eleven months thereafter. Responsible To: Chief, Preservation Department Responsibilities: 1. With the assistance of the Chief of Preservation and the Head of Conservation Treatment, undertake a research project for the Preservation Department (e.g., investigating and recommending a preservation policy for media materials). 2. Under the guidance of the Head of Conservation Treatment, administer a library conservation treatment project, including planning the project, supervising staff and maintaining the budget. This project would entail the use of conservationally sound materials, appropriate techniques and an understanding of conservation principles. 3. Experience the broader administrative and institutional context within which the Preservation Program must operate. This will include participating in Stanford University Libraries committees and attending workshops and conferences as appropriate. The intern will also work closely with the Director of Technical Services on administrative or management assignments or projects to obtain an overview of both Technical Service and SUL (e.g., working on the accreditation process). 4. Write reports documenting the progress of each project including the work completed, the status of the budget and a final report which includes recommendations for the future. Qualifications: 1. An MLS degree from an ALA-accredited library school or the demonstrated equivalent in training and/or experience is required. 2. Education or experience in preservation is required. 3. Education or experience in library preservation administration is desirable. 4. Experience in a library or archives is desirable. 5. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing is required. Background: Stanford University Libraries has a long-standing commitment to the preservation of its research collections. The Preservation Department was formally organized in 1980, and its current staff consists of 4 FTE professionals, 14 FTE paraprofessionals and 2.6 FTE student assistants. The department is composed of the Binding and Finishing Division, Replacement and Reformatting Division, the Conservation Repair Unit and the Conservation Lab. Since 1985, the department has also supported five eleven-month Preservation Administration Intern positions funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The University Libraries system includes the main research library, an instructional and media library, plus twelve research branches. (Not included are the libraries for the Hoover Institution, the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center or the Libraries for Business, Law and Medicine.)
