Subject: Queues and cataloging for microfilm
The University of Florida is engaged in 2 NEH sponsored cooperative grants for Caribbean Basin and Brazilian materials. The former is sponsored by RLG, the latter by SOLINET. We queue volumes for filming via tape-load to RLIN for Caribbean materials and directly on RLIN for Brazilian materials. Tape load results in 1 month delay. We do not do prospective cataloging for a number of reasons. Queuing allowed by the 583 field has not been implemented in OCLC. We have begun to notice that our queues are either being missed or ignored primarily by OCLC libraries. Catalog dates on records are no earlier than 6 months AFTER our queue dates. Because many OCLC libraries catalog prospectively, we are unable to tell if the records represent queues or final products. This problem is really starting to take a bite out of work invested. Any ideas as to WHAT IS GOING ON? Erich J.
