VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT Title: Preservation Program Officer Reports to: Associate Director for Programs Classification: Miscellaneous Professional (C08) Salary: $1,775-2,303/month at half-time, depending upon background and qualifications Note: this is a half-time position Founded in 1974, The Research Libraries Group, Inc. (RLG) is a cooperative association of leading educational, scientific, and cultural institutions. This non-profit corporation currently serves over 100 general and special members and over 700 organizations and individual scholars who use the RLIN database. RLG has two primary functions: the development and operation of cooperative programs to acquire, preserve, and extend access to research library, museum, and archival holdings; and the development and operation of a computerized bibliographic network (RLIN) that provides information access and management to both member and nonmember institutions and individuals. RLG's existence is based on the recognition that only cooperative problem solving and resource sharing will enable research institutions to meet the increasingly sophisticated needs of scholars and educators. RLG has an operating budget of $17,000,000 and a staff of 100. RLG's host institution is Stanford University. Responsibilities The RLG the Preservation Program Officer works with the Associate Director for Programs and the other Preservation Program Officer to initiate, develop and support a range of preservation projects at RLG and direct the on-going preservation activities of the organization. Specifically, the Preservation Program Officer: plans, designs, and implements cooperative projects in collaboration with other program staff, RLG members, and task force appointees; collaborates with the preservation program officer and RLG members to develop grant proposals and funding strategies for preservation-related projects; tracks, monitors, and reports on projects; distributes status reports to RLG members, project participants, and central staff; participates in long-range planning to anticipate future projects and needs; contributes to RLG preservation publications, training events, and online conferencing (PREFIS); serves as an integral member of Programs Division staff and participates in divisional planning, projects, marketing, and other activities as needed; Qualifications MLS and/or advanced degree in an academic discipline and minimum of 8 years professional experience in a research library or equivalent combination of education and experience; demonstrated experience and expertise in the preservation field in general and reformatting projects in particular; demonstrated ability to provide leadership in the design, development and implementation of a wide range of programs and projects at the institutional and network level; demonstrated ability to think both creatively and strategically, to conceptualize and solve problems; demonstrated ability to administer programs and activities involving geographically dispersed individuals and constituencies; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing (a writing sample is required); ability to represent the corporation in a leadership role at the national level; willingness to travel approximately 6-8 days a year.
