Subject: PLMS Chair
Notice to Members, Preservation of Library Materials Section (PLMS), ALA: I am vacating the PLMS slot on the ALCTS Legislation Committee, which I have chaired for two years, and would very much like to be able to help Arnold Hirshon, current president of ALCTS, and Lisa Fox, current chair of PLMS, identify a person interested in replacing me (not as chair, but as a committee member). The mission of the Legislation Committee is, "To monitor legislative activity and identify those issues central to the concerns of the ALCTS membership. To identify appropriate ways in which to respond to relevant legislative issues. To raise awareness regarding library-related legislative activity, and to motivate political action within the ALCTS membership through a variety of means. To cooperate with other ALA legislation groups as appropriate." The PLMS member of the committee, then, has particular responsibility for paying attention to legislative matters involving the preservation of library and archives materials, and bringing such matters to the attention of the committee. Working on divisional committees can be very interesting. The ALCTS Legislation Committee, for example, is comprised of a representative from the Reproduction, Cataloging and Classification, Resources, Serials, and Preservation Sections, and the Council of Regional Groups. There are also two members-at-large and 3 interns. Digesting and mobilizing the different perspectives and experience that this diverse group brings to the table is a guaranteed challenge for everyone on the committee, and there is the added satisfaction of working closely with non-preservation people from all types and sizes of libraries. I could provide, for the person appointed to this position, four sets of committee minutes, several committee reports, and the 1990-91 issues of the ALA Washington Newsletter (which is issued irregularly, usually runs 5 to 7 pages, and is the bottom line for keeping abreast of library-related legislative activities). Anyone interested? Hope so. Please send me an e-message (Jan Merrill-Oldham, hbladm18@uconnvm), and I'll pass along information to Arnold and to Lisa. Thanks. *** Conservation DistList Instance 5:21 Distributed: Sunday, September 29, 1991 Message Id: cdl-5-21-002 ***Received on Tuesday, 24 September, 1991
