He may be >confused with red autotypes. Based upon the description, it sounds to me that you may have a photo heavily toned with Berg Copper Toner, or an equivalent. Do the borders show the tone? If it is indeed copper toner, it is my understanding that it unstable across the long term. You would probably be wise to copy it.
