Subject: Agenda for the Library Binding Discussion Group
LIBRARY BINDING DISCUSSION GROUP ALA Midwinter Meeting, San Antonio January 25, 1992 Marriott Riverwalk Salon B 2:00- 4:00 Agenda 1. Announcements 2. Research and Product Updates 3. Discussion Topics A. Rounding and Backing - Jim Larsen and J Noyes B. Flat Back Binding - Jack Fairfield C. Specification of Cover Boards - Fritz James 4. Other Topics? The discussion topics, interesting in their own right, are made more so because this year's LBI meeting included six or so very well prepared presentations (so I heard from Barclay and Paul Parisi) on these and other technical issues, with pros and cons of different techniques. I've asked Jim Larsen and Jack Fairfield to repeat their sessions for ALA, since the topics are very controversial. These issues are particularly relevant for discussion now since the LBI standard is in the process of being revised to become an ANSI standard and it will remain in force for five years. Fritz's topic is a new one that he is very interested in. It has to do with specifying the weight of cover boards, something which has been very much a judgment call by binders... usually very thick. Fritz seems to be exploring whether thinner boards might not save money and lots of library shelf space, while performing adequately. So you see, the discussion should be very lively. *** Conservation DistList Instance 5:35 Distributed: Saturday, January 11, 1992 Message Id: cdl-5-35-001 ***Received on Friday, 3 January, 1992
