Subject: Proprietary solvents
I got the following note recently. I've already passed on to Ms Redmon the party line on using proprietary products of unknown composition, and the usual Stern Cautions, but if anyone does have any information about the formulation of these products, I'm sure many of us will be interested. **** Moderator's comments: The following query comes from a person who is not on the DistList and will not see any responses that are posted here. My question to the Archives network was about removing a pamphlet glued inside a rare book. By now it is academic. When I tried water and a microspatula, it came right off with no damage to either item. Still, the adhesive might not be water soluble next time. So here's the question: Does anyone use Peel or Lusenback (sp?) to loosen glued items? What are their compositions? Safe for paper? And if safe, does anyone know where they may be purchased? Here's what the label says: Hagaron Peel. New Wonder Liquid. Made in Japan. Exclusive Importer: Yasutomo & Co, San Francisco. Patent Pending. A colleague reports that she inherited Lusenback 15 years ago when a true neophyte to rare books custodianship. When it left a slight sticky sticky residue, she abandoned it and hasn't seen it since. Thanks a lot for any help you or your networkers can give us. --Sherrill 588-6674 *** Conservation DistList Instance 5:35 Distributed: Saturday, January 11, 1992 Message Id: cdl-5-35-009 ***Received on Saturday, 11 January, 1992
