Princeton University Libraries Princeton, New Jersey Position: Special Collections Paper Conservator Available:Immediately Description:Responsible for the physical care and conservation treatment on a wide variety of materials (chiefly flat paper) at Princeton University Libraries, principally from the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. Materials include manuscripts, posters, prints, broadsides, maps, photographs, newspapers, and works of art on paper, characterized by rarity, value, and complex problems. Establishes preservation and conservation priorities and treatment strategies for these materials in association with the Preservation Librarian and the special collections curators; carries out condition surveys and needs assessments; provides appropriate treatment documentation for treated materials; manages large-scale treatment projects of special collections materials in association with the General Collections Conservator; oversees exhibit preparation activities; monitors environments of storage and exhibition areas; establishes a point system to coordinate treatment time among various constituencies. Reports directly to the Preservation Librarian and assists in determining the direction and priorities of the Preservation Office and the Special Collections Conservation Unit, in establishing preservation and conservation policies in the Library, and in addressing the informational needs of the Library staff and University community. Qualifications:Required: Bachelors degree or equivalent experience. Graduate degree in paper conservation from accredited academic institution, or in lieu of the degree, equivalent professional experience in paper conservation will be considered. Additionally, a minimum of four years post-graduate professional experience in paper conservation. Demonstrated ability to work on a wide range of paper-based special collections materials in a complex organization and to communicate effectively with people. Experience in coordinating conservation activities among several constituencies in a special collections, archives, rare books, or research library setting. Desirable: Significant additional practical preservation/conservation treatments experience with vellum, papyri, textblocks, and bookbindings. Supervisory experience. Familiarity with operating Macintosh computers.
