Subject: New RLG Preservation Microfilming Handbook
RLG Publishes Important New Handbook for Preservation Microfilming Written by panel of experts, new filming guidelines revise and expand on earlier RLG versions April 20, 1992 -- The RLG PRESERVATION MICROFILMING HANDBOOK, newly published by the Research Libraries Group (RLG), is a 204-page manual prescribing practices and procedures for libraries and other institutions involved in preserving monographs and serials on microfilm. The publication, which supersedes the earlier RLG PRESERVATION MANUAL (2nd ed., Stanford, CA, 1986), results from the work of 18 RLG-selected preservation microfilming specialists representing libraries, commercial micropublishers, filming bureaus, and related organizations. It is edited by RLG preservation program officer Nancy E. Elkington. Since 1983 RLG has led the way in large-scale cooperative microfilming projects. RLG's microfilming guidelines, an outgrowth of these projects, have been used by an increasing number of libraries and other cultural institutions as the national effort to preserve deteriorating materials has gained momentum. The handbook features detailed guidelines -- based on accepted national and international standards -- for prefilming, targeting, and filming of monographs, pamphlets, and serials. Appendices supplement this information with samples of contracts, requests for information (RFIs), requests for proposal (RFPs), instructional flags, reel programming worksheets, quality control report forms, and selected targets. Other appendices address the impact of microfilming projects on libraries, considerations when expanding filming capacity, recommended procedures for inspecting microfilm, and the polysulfide treatment of microfilm. A chart (15 x 30 inches) for identifying defects in camera negatives is also enclosed. The RLG PRESERVATION MICROFILMING HANDBOOK is spiral-bound with stiff covers, 204 pages, illustrated, indexed, printed on alkaline paper. Price: $75.00 per copy, plus applicable sales tax and $5.00 for shipping and handling.
