Columbia University Libraries has two preservation positions available:

HEAD, PRESERVATION REFORMATTING DEPARTMENT

Responsibility for managing the preservation microfilming program,
including writing and monitoring contracts with filming and photography
vendors; managing grant-funded microfilming projects; supervision of
technical staff who microfilm and photograph materials and perform
quality control; and supervision of staff who prepare materials for
filming (establishing bibliographic control, targetting, collating, and
physical preparation).  Responsibilities also include coordinating pre-
and post-filming procedures; management of the customer order program
for microfilm and still photography; and assisting in all aspects of the
CUL Preservation Program, including training, publications, committees,
disaster prevention and recovery, and system-wide planning for
preservation.

Requirements are:  knowledge of preservation microfilming policies and
technical procedures, with 2 years of experience in a microfilming
operation required; knowledge of bibliographic control of microforms,
current preservation trends, and library automation; ability to work in
a fluid, complex organization and to communicate effectively both
verbally and in writing.  Formal study of preservation and supervisory
experience in a large academic library are desirable.  An accredited MLS
or equivalent experience, and knowledge of one or more foreign languages
are also required.

We are particularly interested in minority applicants for this position.

Salary ranges are:  Librarian I:  $30,100-39,130; Librarian II:
$32,100-$43,335.  Excellent benefits include assistance with University

PRESERVATION ADMINISTRATION INTERN

This is a temporary 12-month position funded by a grant from the Mellon
Foundation to support research library preservation programs nationally.
The intern will report to the Assistant Director for Preservation, and
will spend time learning the operations of each Preservation Division
unit, including the Conservation Laboratory, Preservation Reformatting
Department, and Materials Processing. Responsibilities will include
surveying the condition of a branch library collection, assessing
current procedures and needs, assisting in preparation of a grant
proposal, and other appropriate special projects.  The intern will have
the opportunity to participate in planning sessions, policy discussions,
and other library-wide preservation activities.

In addition to an accredited MLS, requirements are:  knowledge of
preservation and conservation practices and techniques, as demonstrated
through previous relevant experience and/or successful completion of a
formal program in the preservation of research library materials.

Salary is $31,100 per annum.  Excellent benefits include assistance with
