Subject: Compact shelving
Brown University is planning to move some of its collections into compact shelving. I have heard some anecdotal evidence about the problem of limited air circulation with regard to compact shelving and its effect on the preservation of books. Has anything been written on compact shelving and the preservation of library materials? If not, what experiences have people on the list had with compact shelving? Do the books on compact shelving tend to deteriorate faster than books on regular shelving? Are they more susceptible to mold? Infestations by pests? Or is there no noticeable difference? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
