Subject: Appointment at Huntington Library
The Huntington Library is pleased to announce the appointment of Randy H. Silverman as its Chief Preservation Officer, effective July 1. Mr. Silverman is a graduate of the Evergreen State College, and received his M.L.S. from Brigham Young University where he has taught as an adjunct faculty member for the past four years. He has worked as a conservator and preservation administrator at BYU since 1983, following training as a bookbinder in Florida. As preservation librarian of the 3 million volume Lee Library at BYU he established and maintained environmental and treatment standards, managed a staff of 1. 18.5 FTE in book repair, bindery preparation, micro-reproduction, and stacks maintenance. He was the founding chair of the Utah Preservation Consortium, and remains active in the Book and Paper Group of the American Institute for Conservation. He has contributed chapters and articles to the Book and Paper Group Annual of the American Institute for Conservation (1988), Library Technical Services: Operations and Management (1991), Advances in Librarianship (in press), and The Complete Binder: Studies in Book Making and Conservation in honor of Roger Powell (in press). At the Huntington he will have overall responsibility for the Conservation Department, for planning and managing projects, and for developing and implementing preservation policies through the library.
