Princeton University Libraries Princeton, New Jersey Position:Assistant General Collections Conservator Available:Immediately Description:Responsible for conserving and preserving a full range of research materials from the 18th-20th centuries in the Library's general collections. Performs an array of repairs and conservation treatments in a production setting on paper, cloth and leather bindings and textblocks according to in-house standards, specifications, and documentation practices. Assists the General Collections Conservator in planning and organizing unit activities and liaison duties between the Collections Conservation Unit and other library units and staff as necessary, including consultation with selectors, bibliographers, curators, and branch librarians. Identifies treatment options for materials selected for conservation and preservation; performs condition surveys; manages mass treatment projects; trains staff as necessary. Performs a variety of tasks that support the goals of both the Collections Conservation Unit and the Preservation Office. Reports directly to the General Collections Conservator. In the absence of the General Collections Conservator, supervises unit staff and manages unit operations including specifying treatments and overseeing routine workflow of library materials in and out of the Conservation Laboratory. Qualifications:Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Minimum one year prior experience in collections conservation in a library or archives preservation program. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in philosophy, ethics, practices, principles, and techniques employed in the conservation and preservation of library materials. Demonstrated ability and skill to work knowledgeably, independently, and productively on a variety of library materials, and in performing a variety of book and paper repair and conservation techniques. Demonstrated ability to work in a fluid, complex organization and to communicate effectively with all library staff. Previous experience in treatment decisionmaking, surveying, and staff training and supervision. Must be able to contribute meaningfully and effectively to the Library's collections conservation program. Desirable: Advanced degree in library or archives collections conservation; significant collections conservation experience in a research library setting. An applicant who is chosen for an interview must present a portfolio of successful collections conservation treatments. Benefits:Twenty-four (24) vacation days a year, plus eleven (11) paid holidays. Annuity program (TIAA/CREF), group life insurance, health coverage insurance, and disability insurance, all paid for by the University. Salary & Rank:Minimum salary: $30,200. Higher starting salary dependent upon qualifications and experience. Position will be filled at the professional level.
