The following announcement describes a position currently available within Yale University's Preservation Department, one of the oldest in the country. PRESERVATION LIBRARIAN, Preservation Department, Yale University Library Yale University's Preservation Department consists of two Divisions, those of Preservation and Conservation, containing a total of 24 staff members and 18 student assistants. The Preservation Division manages the basic collections care program for the principal humanities libraries and provides consultation and educational services to the entire library system. The Division administers major grant-funded projects for preservation microfilming and other treatment options and operates a microfilming laboratory with two active cameras and processing capabilities. The Conservation Division is responsible for the hands-on treatment and care of the Yale collections, carrying out single-item conservation treatments, extensive pamphlet binding, and collection conservation activities. The Department Head provides campus-wide and national leadership in the preservation of library and archival resources for the Yale Library system, administers the comprehensive preservation program now in place and plans its future development, trains interns in preservation administration, and participates in the implementation and evaluation of a pilot system for converting microfilm to digital images. RESPONSIBILITIES: The Preservation Librarian assists the Head, Preservation Department in managing the ongoing work of the department and in planning and developing new campus-wide preservation initiatives. In his absence may serve as department head. Coordinates the review of deteriorated materials, monitors processing workflow, supervises clerical and technical staff; trains new staff in all aspects of materials processing; and assists in daily problem-solving within the Department. In addition to managing the microfilming laboratory, the Preservation Librarian has wide responsibilities in the development, implementation, and oversight of special reformatting projects, both within the University and with outside vendors, and assists the Department Head in testing and evaluating the pilot digital imaging system. The Preservation Librarian carries out preservation education activities, and will be expected to be involved in national preservation initiatives and appropriate professional association activities. QUALIFICATIONS: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school required. Two or more years of professional experience in a preservation program, or the equivalent training with some field experience, required. Knowledge of microforms and preservation microfilming required. Demonstrated ability to plan projects, write reports, and communicate effectively. Supervisory experience preferred. Experience in managing a microfilm laboratory preferred. Familiarity with the care and handling of archives, photographs, film, or other non-book materials desired. SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary from $32,700 (Librarian II minimum).
