Subject: Brief book review
I see much of the conservation and preservation literature, both serials and monographs. Ellen McCrady does a great job of keeping track of this literature, but would the consdist readership find brief reviews from others useful, too? For example, "Mass Deacidification: A Report to the Library Directors," Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC, a 13-member consortium of university research libraries in, loosely, the midwest), Task Force on Mass Deacidification, April 1992, reviews the experience of two test runs of books from Northwestern University and a test run of 50 books from each of the member libraries (650 volumes) through the Akzo (DEZ) and FMC (MG-3) processes. It outlines what was learned about selection, processing, cost, pH changes, and "side effects" (read cosmetic damage and odor). It also reviews toxicological information in the context of NUL's internal authorization for experimental MD through their own Office of Research Safety. It's useful reading for any preservation officer considering a MD program for bound materials.
