The Magnetic Media Challenge:  Preservation of
Audio Tape & Videotape in Libraries and Archives

The Preservation of Library Materials Section of ALCTS/ALA, in
cooperation with the Association of Research Libraries, the Society of
American Archivists, and the Southeast Library Information Network, is
sponsoring a two-day conference on the preservation of audio tape and
videotape.  The program, The Magnetic Media Challenge:  Preservation of
Audio Tape & Videotape in Libraries and Archives, will be held on May 21
and 22, 1993, at Georgia State University in Atlanta. Participants will
gain an understanding of the history of audio tape and videotape
recording technology, the physical characteristics and life expectancy
of magnetic tape, proper storage and handling techniques, the challenges
of re-recording aging tape for preservation purposes, the present status
of efforts to preserve magnetic tape, and new trends in the use of audio
tape and videotape for research and instruction.

Topics will be treated in depth.  Speakers include Dave Wickstrom and
Bill Storm (DEC), Del Eilers (3-M), Fred Layn (Ampex), Less Waffen
(NARA), and Cliff Kuhn (Georgia State University).

Registration fees are $145 for ALCTS/ALA members, $180 for ALA, ARL,
SAA, and SOLINET members; and $215 for other interested persons.  The
conference hotel, the Suite Hotel, is located in Underground Atlanta.
