Subject: Digital preservation of maps
Yes, there are scanners large enough to scan maps. The one the Map & Imagery Lab at the UCSB library has can scan anything from a slide to a nautical chart; there are the same number of pixels whatever the size of the item you're scanning, so the smaller the item, the better resolution. It's called an Eikonix; we use it with image-processing software called ERDAS. Larry Carver, head of the Map & Imagery Lab, has given a presentation on using digital technology to a Los Angeles preservation group. Mary L.
