The Hoover Institution is seeking qualified candidates for the position of

Position Title:    Preservation Officer
                                                      Salary Range
Classification:    Assistant Librarian             $28,212 - $39,612
                   Associate Librarian             $34,548 - $43,896

Appointment Term:  Three-year initial appointment, with possibility of
                   extension.

Responsibilities:  The Preservation Officer reports to the Head
Librarian of the Western Languages Collection and is responsible for the
administration of Preservation Services at the Hoover Institution
Library and Archives.

Specific duties include:

  Employ technical expertise to ensure the preservation of the Hoover
  Institution's library and archival collections.  Approximately fifty
  percent time will be devoted to performing conservation treatment of a
  highly complex or technical nature on special collections materials.

  Supervision and training of the support staff employed in
  Microfilming, Shelf Preparation, Binding Preparation, and other
  components of Preservation Services as they are developed.
  Maintaining appropriate standards in these areas.


  Coordinate allocation of personnel and fiscal resources to address
  identified needs.

  Develop efficient and conservationally-sound treatment procedures,
  including evaluation and documentation strategy; determine work flow,
  production levels, and quality control standards; and ensure
  compliance with health and safety guidelines.

  Responsible for specialized facilities and equipment used in
  conservation treatment of collections; lab design and layout;
  evaluation, selection and maintenance of equipment; and documentation
  of procedures for equipment use.

  Assist the Head Librarian of the Western Languages Collection on
  matters of departmental administration and advise on technical aspects
  of emerging preservation technologies.

  Participate in Library and Archives departmental meetings to formulate
  preservation policy and to advise on preservation-related issues;
  produce documents needed for reporting or planning.

  Provide leadership, training, and assistance in collection disaster
  response and maintain disaster response manual; develop and distribute
  policy relating to care and handling of collections.

  Serve as principal contact between Preservation Services and the rest
  of the Library and Archives staff, and as liaison to curators; provide
  technical preservation advice to all staff and to faculty and the
  general public; maintain appropriate professional memberships and
  association; establish and maintain relations with vendors of
  preservation supplies and services; offer presentations on issues
  relating to collection care and treatment to staff, users and
  potential donors.


Required Qualifications:

The Preservation Officer must possess the ability to work with
considerable independence, displaying creativity, sound judgment and
good management skills, and remain abreast of developments in the field
of library and archival preservation.  Specific qualifications required
include:

  Completion of a recognized conservation training program or a formal
  apprenticeship, or demonstration of a similar level of education and
  training required for the conservation of book and paper artifacts.

  Knowledge of conservation ethics and practices relevant to library and
  archival materials.

  Knowledge of binding techniques, history of printing and of the
  structural developments of book and record materials.

  Knowledge of physical and chemical mechanisms of deterioration of
  library and archival materials.

  A minimum of two years supervisory experience with demonstrated
  ability to manage a diverse staff, and a commitment to the principles
  of affirmative action.

  Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  as well as possess strong interpersonal skills.

  A bachelor's degree or the equivalent in training and experience.

  Experience in a research library or archives setting is preferred.

Background:

The Hoover Institution at Stanford University is a library and research
center for the study of 20th century political, social, and economic
problems.  The library comprises seven principal area collections, Asia,
Central and Western Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, East Central
European and the Commonwealth of Independent States--and contains
approximately 1.6 million volumes, some 25,000 periodical titles, and
files of approximately 6,000 newspapers in 30 languages.  The
collections of the Hoover Institution Library serve pertinent teaching
