Subject: Conference on Magnetic Media
"The Magnetic Media Challenge: Preservation of Audio Tape and Videotape in Libraries and Archives" is the subject of a new national institute to be held May 21-22, 1993, in Atlanta, Georgia. The program has been developed by the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) Preservation of Library Materials Section, and is co-sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), Society of American Archivists (SAA), and Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET). The program is designed for librarians and archivists responsible for housing, maintaining, and providing access to information stored on audio tape and videotape. Media center librarians, television news archivists, and curators of oral history collections will especially want to attend, along with preservation managers in public libraries, academic institutions, and archives. This in-depth program will provide an understanding of the history and composition of audio and videotape, analysis of analog and digital technology, and practical recommendations on care and handling, storage systems, equipment selection and maintenance, staff and user training, and emerging technologies. Nationally recognized specialists in magnetic media technology, preservation, and history will address the institute. Speakers include Delos Eilers, Professional Audio/Video Products Division of 3-M; Cliff Kuhn, Associate Director of the Georgia Documentation Project; Frederick Layn, Ampex Recording Media Corporation; Bill Storm, Belfer Audio Laboratory and Archive of Syracuse University; Les Waffen, National Archives and Records Administration; and David Wickstrom, Belfer Audio Laboratory and Archive of Syracuse University. This institute has been developed by a planning committee including: Jan Merrill-Oldham (University of Connecticut), Debra McKern (LC), Jutta Reed-Scott (ARL), Mark Roosa (Huntington Library), Patricia Smith (Ohio University), and Chris Paton (Georgia State University). Registration fees are $145 for ALCTS members, $170 for ALA personal members, and members of ARL, SAA, and SOLINET; and $205 for non-ALA members. Interest in this program (and the other ALCTS offerings this spring) is so strong that the text of the brochure copy and the registration form have been placed in ALCTSERV, the fileserver that contains back issues of AN2 [ALCTS's electronic newsletter], volunteer forms, reports forms, and other important ALCTS documents. (To find out all the documents available, send the following command to LISTSERV@UICVM: send alcts filelist The ALCTS FILELIST contains the list of files with the EXACT filename and filetype.) To get the file containing the brochure text for the Magnetic Media Institute, do one of the following: tell listserv@uicvm send MAGMEDIA BROCHURE or send a note to LISTSERV@UICVM with the text: SEND MAGMEDIA BROCHURE This new use of the capabilities of the Internet will help the ALCTS staff improve service to ALCTS members and others by enabling you to obtain a copy of the brochure text when you want it, not when it finally arrives in the mail. You will also be able to complete and mail your registration form at your own convenience, though in this case ALCTS does ask that you follow up with a regular e-mail message, if you have not received confirmation of your registration--for messages can get lost on the electronic pathways and systems do go down. Of course, you may also request hard copy of the brochure from Yvonne McLean at ALCTS, 800-545-2433, ext. 5032. *** Conservation DistList Instance 6:47 Distributed: Sunday, February 28, 1993 Message Id: cdl-6-47-011 ***Received on Friday, 19 February, 1993
