                         Archival Preservation

                            August 1-6, 1993

The PI Institute is a new series of annual workshops designed to address
the continuing education needs of preservation and conservation
professionals.

Preservation administrators, faculty of schools of library and
information science, curators, archivists, record managers,
conservators, and librarians who manage preservation activities are
encouraged to attend.

This year's program, hosted by the University of Pittsburgh, will
include the following courses:

Preservation of Electronic Formats: Dr. Michael Spring, Department of
Information Science, University of Pittsburgh, will consider the
preservation of electronic media, and implications of its selection,
use, and management. Preservation challenges, physical formats,
ethics, and access will also be discussed.

Bookbinding and the Arts and Crafts Movement: Dr. Marianne Tidcombe,
author and distinguished historian of late nineteenth and early
twentieth century binders, will address the work of T.J. Cobden-
Sanderson, his students, and the Doves Bindery, examining their
influence on design and structure of later binderies.

Science Serving Preservation: Dr. Jan Lyall, Acting Director of the
Preservation Office, National Library of Australia, will offer an
in-depth look at recent scientific research affecting preservation and
conservation. This course will discuss guidelines for interpreting
  scientific data.

Tuition for the PI Institute is $300. Housing is available at a group
rate ($69/night) at a nearby hotel. Inexpensive dormitory rooms are
also available ($26/night single, $32/night double).

Ten Scholarships of $750 each are available for applicants demonstrating
need; five scholarships are reserved for minority candidates.

This opportunity is the result of a cooperative effort among deans from
five schools of library and information science, supported by a grant
from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Participating
institutions and their faculty representatives are:

    University of Pittsburgh; Sally Buchanan
    UCLA, Michele Cloonan
University of Texas, Austin; Carolyn Harris
