Subject: Inventory control
As part of my manic determination to set up a wonderfully effective and idiotproof inventory control system in the conservation lab here at Princeton, one which will also record treatments performed (to ARL specs) and by whom and how long it took, and one which will be indexable and searchable in all fields especially those containing bibliographic data, I need to consider using an existing database, like NOTIS or GEAC, to store and retrieve treatment information rather than creating a standalone Mac or PC system which cannot be easily linked to or down(up)loaded to a larger database. Whew, what a sentence! Try saying this out loud. Who out there is currently inputting conservation treatment info into their bibliographic records via the 583 or other field? And what have your experiences been, especially with regard to its capabilities to be used for report writing, statistics, time studies, etc? Has your systems office created any site-specific (NOTIS, or GEAC) programs which might be adapted to systems in other libraries? Any comments privately or thru the net will be appreciated....
