Chemical sponges

In response to Dean Debolt's question about chemical sponges: As a
preservation consultant, working in disaster recovery planning and
response, I work with the chemical sponges quite a lot. The chemical
sponges are made of pure latex and come in a variety of sizes. They do
remove all that is promised. *Do not get them wet; they will never
dry.*

In addition, getting them wet will smear the dirt back into the item.
Just keep cutting off the dirty spots until they come clean. When there
is no more left to work with, just toss out.
