Subject: Symposium on internships in preservation administration
The New York Public Library and The Yale University Library present: Internships in Preservation Administration: Concept and Reality A Symposium June 11, 1993 Ten years ago, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded the first in a series of grants supporting internships in preservation administration. Since that time, more that twenty-five interns have been trained at host institutions across the country. Many past interns are now serving as chief preservation administrators at major academic institutions, and playing a significant role in national preservation activities. To mark the tenth anniversary of this innovative internship program, The New York Public Library and the Yale University Library are sponsoring a one-day symposium: "Internships in Preservation Administration: Concept and Reality." Goals and Objectives: This symposium will provide a national forum to describe and discuss the impact of the Mellon Intern program in developing a national preservation infrastructure and to examine the effectiveness of internships as a means of training preservation administrators. Program: Program speakers include Sally Buchanan, Carolyn Harris, Regina Sinclair and David Stam. In their presentations, they will describe the history and background of the internship program, address the role of internships in the larger educational context, and discuss the practicalities of internships as a means of moving into the preservation administration job market. In addition, panels of former and present interns will highlight their experiences, and program officers from host institutions will discuss their perspective on internships. The symposium will also provide a forum for discussing the future of internships. Participants: Invitations have been extended to all past and present Mellon Preservation Administration Interns, representatives of each of the five original host institutions, preservation administrators, educators, library directors and other interested members of the library and archives preservation community. Funding: This program is funded through the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant for internship programs at The New York Public Library and the Yale University Library. There is no registration fee. A stipend is available to former and present Mellon Interns. Location & Date: The symposium will take place in the Trustees Room on the 2nd floor of the New York Public Library, Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street, New York, NY 10018. It will be held on Friday, June 11, 1993, from 8:30 to 4:30.
