Library Conservator

The Minnesota Historical Society has an immediate opening for a
permanent, full-time Library Conservator to manage the book conservation
lab in its new facility. The lab is staffed by the library conservator
who supervises one full-time assistant and, on an intermittent basis,
temporary or project staff, volunteers and interns. The 2400
square-foot book and paper lab, which is shared with the archives
conservator, is one component of a fully equipped conservation suite
which also includes objects and textile conservation labs, photo
documentation room, secure holding rooms for collections, supplies
storage, and rooms for isolating and treating contaminated collections.
Easy access also exists to a flush-edge, book photocopier.

Materials treated in the book lab include bound materials from all of
the Society's diverse collections -- library, manuscripts, state
archives and museum. While the 250,000 volume non-circulating research
library includes a rare book collection, collections maintenance on 19th
and early 20th century material is the primary focus of the book lab.

Responsibilities include: recommending, performing, and documenting
conservation treatments; assisting in the formulation and implementation
of priorities, policies, and standards; supervising lab staff; working
with staff librarians, archivists, curators and exhibits design and
production personnel in selecting appropriate treatments, housings, and
exhibit mounts; sharing responsibilities with the Head of Conservation
and other conservators in monitoring storage conditions, maintaining the
disaster preparedness plan, and providing education to staff and advice
to the public on conservation and preservation.

Requirements include graduation from an accredited conservation program
and significant experience or an equivalent combination of
training/experience along with significant work experience. Minimum
salary is $30,819 with excellent benefits.
