There are a couple of solutions available to dispense with the plague of seldom-used rapidographs. Many museums use a crow-quill (an old-fashioned metal quill or other tip for calligraphy) instead of a mechanical drawing pen. You also might find a "felt tip" type marker that used ink that was insoluble in the solvents used in Soluvar, but you'd have to do some testing on a surface other than your objects. Let the ink dry thoroughly, and try a coating layer of Soluvar. It either will or won't smear the ink. Unfortunately the light-fastness of marker inks is not well documented, and you wouldn't know what aging properties they'd have in the long run. I'd go with the standard quill pen and india ink.
