Subject: Removal of carbon-enhanced inks
We would be interested to hear if anyone has any experience in the removal of carbon based inks that have been used to enhance iron-gall ink writing. One document for which this is being considered is parchment and was written in iron-gall ink in about 1900. This ink is now flaking from the surface. Carbon ink has been used to trace over parts of the original iron-gall writing. This was probably done about 40 years ago. The document has a very unappealing look due to the different colours of the two inks and the manner in which the carbon ink was applied. Thanks!
