Subject: Photocopies, etc.
The archive I'm working on has in it just about every possible type of copy & copy paper ever manufactured. Most of the sheets are readable now enough so that I can at least xerox another readable copy onto permalife paper and remove the copy sheets to separate files. However some of the copies have deteriorated to the point of being illegible. The copies have stained(looks like a burn) the sheets (usually original correspondence) surrounding them and they smell like they're ready to burst into flame. Does anyone have any experience with this type of material? I'm interleaving the originals with permalife paper and removing them to separate files and replacing them with xeroxed copies on permalife. The duplicate copies are permanently removed. But are the new xerox copies of these pages any better or will they too deteriorate?
