Preservation Projects Librarian

The Preservation Projects Librarian is responsible for the management of
externally-funded preservation and access projects administered by the
Preservation Office of the Harvard University Library. The projects are
part of Harvard's contribution to a nationwide program to preserve and
improve access to deteriorating research materials. The Preservation
Projects Librarian works with collection specialists to coordinate
project activities; ensures consistency, productivity, and
cost-effectiveness across the full range of preservation activities; and
implements policies and procedures in accord with national standards for
preservation access. He/she reports to the Malloy-Rabinowitz
Preservation Librarian and is responsible for an annual budget of
approximately $1 million and a staff of approximately 12 FTE.

As a senior member of the Preservation Office, the Preservation Projects
Librarian participates in all aspects of the development of preservation
projects including selecting special collections and working with
collection specialists to gather background information and survey
collections. He/she works closely with the Malloy-Rabinowitz
Preservation Librarian, the Chief Conservator, the Head of Photographic
Services, and collection specialists on proposal development including
the development of preservation and access plans, staffing
configurations, and budgets.

The Preservation Projects Librarian is challenged to develop and
maintain Harvard's operational capability for successful execution of
large scale, complex preservation and access projects within strict
budget and time limits while maintaining consistency and standards.
He/she contributes to the evolving national preservation program through
the development and improvement of techniques and standards and by
participating in professional associations. As the administrator of the
microfilm master negative collection, he/she ensures that master
negatives added to the collection meet archival standards and are stored
under appropriate conditions.

Qualifications:  Masters in Library Science and a minimum of 3 years
experience in a position with management or programmatic responsibility
in a research library. Thorough knowledge of online library systems.
Experience in a large research library preservation program desirable.

Institutional Information: The Preservation Office is part of the Office
of the Director of the University Library and is responsible for the
development and coordination of a network of preservation activities and
programs for the benefit of the 90 libraries comprising Harvard's
decentralized library system. In FY 1992, there were 82 FTE engaged in
preservation activities library-wide including 14 professional staff and
a total expenditure of $3.8 million.
