Indiana University Libraries win John Cotton Dana Award for Public Relations Program Indiana University Libraries has been selected as a winner of the prestigious John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Award for its public relations program: Preservation Awareness Week. The John Cotton Dana Awards are given annually for exceptional library public relations efforts by the New York-bases H. W. Wilson Publishing Company and the Library Administration and Management Association, a division of the American Library Association. Indiana University Libraries received a "special" award for their Spring 1992 "Preservation Awareness Week" which featured sophisticated graphics and creative programming to educate a diverse audience about preservation issues to improve the care and handling of its collections. Dr. George Cunha, founder and director emeritus of the Northeast Document Conservation Center in Andover, Massachusetts was the keynote speaker, discussing new trends and challenges in the preservation of research library materials in his talk, "Libraries and Archives Conservation: 1990s and Beyond." Other activities included tours of the Preservation Department, a "book diagnostic clinic," and a preservation "film festival." Bookmarks, book bags, posters and other items were handed out to promote the week's activities. The Dana Award, given annually since 1946, recognizes creativity and excellence in library public relations programs. The competition is sponsored jointly by H. W. Wilson and the LAMA Public Relations Section. The contest honors the career of John Cotton Dana, an eminent librarian who was a pioneer in using public relations techniques to promote library use and support. A JCD "Special Award" recognizes a discrete aspect of library public relations, promoting a program that is directed toward a specific goal and is limited in time and scope. *** Conservation DistList Instance 7:12 Distributed: Monday, July 19, 1993 Message Id: cdl-7-12-004 ***Received on Thursday, 15 July, 1993
