Subject: Salvage Boxes and Kits
A year ago in the Conservation DistList, Jan Merrill-Oldham announced the availability of ProText, Inc.'s RESCUBE--a high density polyethylene, easy-to-store, reusable box for transporting water-soaked items to freezers. RESCUBEs were designed to assist with disaster preparedness. But if needed for a current emergency, they can be shipped overnight. A new ProText product is REACT-PAK, a compact disaster preparedness kit, designed to come to the "first aid" of water damaged books files and other valuable materials. It has the basics necessary to take immediate action in the event of a manmade or natural emergency. This kit was developed with extensive involvement from the preservation and conservation community. Initially, in December 1991, a focus group of librarians, conservators, special collections people and archivists in the Washington DC area helped to formulate the concept. Since then many suggestions have been incorporated in the development of the kit. Accompanying every REACT-PAK is an information packet with: (1) important recovery tips, (2) emergency "do's and dont's," (3) sources for disaster recovery services and assistance, (4) list of FEMA offices, and (5) listing of refrigerated warehouses by state. REACT-PAK sells for $119.95 plus shipping and handling. The various items in the REACT-PAK may be ordered separately. This makes it possible to customize or supplement kits with additional quantities of disaster planning supplies. ProText, Inc. specializes in disaster preparedness expertise and products expressly designed to help libraries, museums, archives, and records centers protect their collections and recover those that have been water-damaged.
