Subject: WAAC Newsletter
The Sept. 1993 "WAAC Newsletter" is now available. Of special interest: Eradication of Insect Pests in Museums Using Nitrogen, by Vinod Daniel, Gordon Hanlon, and Shin Maekawa. Conservation scientists from the Getty Conservation Institute and the J. Paul Getty Museum give a practical description of this anoxic method for treating insect-infested objects. Sheldon Keck: Publications. A bibliography of 48 publications by Sheldon Keck, who died this past summer. He was a pioneer in American "scientific" conservation and a leader in the development of art conservation training. Conductivity Measurements, by Werner Zimmt. The accuracy of a group of small, portable conductivity-measuring devices was evaluated in comparison to a conventional conductivity bridge. These smaller instruments are particularly convenient for archaeological field labs, to monitor the conductivity of the water when ceramics are soaked to remove salts. Conservation at Mission San Xavier del Bac, by Jason L. Metcalfe. An overview of the past and current work at a late-18th-century Spanish Colonial mission near Tucson, Arizona. "Traditional" techniques to protect the exterior have been readopted, and the interior murals are in the process being cleaned. Funding and coordination has been innovative. Book Reviews: "Guide to the Maintenance of Outdoor Sculpture" (Naude and Wharton) is reviewed by New York-based outdoor sculpture consultant Nancy Heller. "Conservation of Plastics: An Introduction to Their History, Manufacture, Deterioration, Identification, and Care" (Morgan) is reviewed by decorative arts conservator Don Sale, of the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts. Also: All the usual "WAAC Newsletter" columns, plus a preliminary schedule for the WAAC Annual Meeting (2-5 October 1993). Separate issues cost $10 postpaid.
