Subject: Salaries
Peter Graham points out that $18,000.00 is a shamefully low salary to offer for a conservation technician position, to which I say, true. As supervisor of Princeton University Libraries' Collections Conservation Unit I have constantly battled for higher wages for my employees, but it has done very little good. This is a support staff level position that is similar to those positions offered to "non-college graduates who have completed a training course to be a travel agents." (Graham's posting) This position is, unfortunately, slotted with a salary comparable to all support staff positions in libraries nation wide. Library support staff salaries are too low, but that discussion is best left to another forum. However, the Princeton position does have three things going for it. 1) We tell people up front what they can expect in the way of pay, 2) The person who is hired into this position will receive state of the art training in collections conservation, and 3) Princeton University Libraries almost always pays its support staff members more money that Rutgers University Libraries do ;-).
