Book Repair Specialist The University of Utah's Book Repair Specialist is responsible for collections conservation of a two million volume research library. This position's goals and duties include: 1. Hiring, training and supervising book repair technicians in appropriate repair techniques, including: heat set tissue repair, Japanese paper and paste mending and guarding, supported and unsupported sewing, adhesive binding, cloth spine repairs, temporary binding, case binding, split board binding, Japanese paper board hinging, board tacketing, encapsulation, Chicago screw post encapsulation binders, box making (phase boxes, portfolios, and drop-back boxes), and creating computer-generated labels. 2. Reviewing materials for treatment. Establishing treatment specifications that support the institution's requirements for long-term retention. 3. Expediting shop procedures to balance shop performance against library use patterns. 4. Maintaining treatment and production standards for repair of the collection. 5. Implementing preventive measures as appropriate to minimize future damage to new acquisitions published in vulnerable formats (i.e., maps, pamphlets, and paperbound materials). Five years library or related work experience or equivalency and demonstrated verbal and written communication skills required. Advanced knowledge of hand bookbinding techniques and principles and supervisory experience strongly preferred. The minimum annual salary for the position is $16,662, including an excellent benefits package. On-the-job professional development is one of the benefits/expectations for this position.
