Subject: Preservation issues in graduate studies
The Medieval Academy of America's Committee on Preservation and Access wishes to discover how (or whether) graduate students receive instruction about issues in preservation. We are interested not only about whether graduate students in medieval studies are trained in how materials should be handled during research, but also whether graduate students are introduced to broader issues such as how embrittlement will affect research in the future. This query is being cross listed on boards of interest to medievalists, rare book librarians and preservation specialists in the hope that each group will provide information about training, whether informal or formal, at universities and colleges. Even if there has been no attempt to introduce these matters at your school, I would be very interested in hearing your suggestions about what should be done.
