Subject: Radioactive contamination of records
An article in the February 1992 issue of "INFORM" discusses the solutions used by a company to retrieve records that were contaminated in a fire. While the situations are not totally comparable, there may be some applicability. The company is considering sending workers in protective gear into the office to clean the documents, transfer them to a "clean" room, and then photocopy the records on a machine which was inserted through a wall of the building from the "clean room" to the "outside." The decision eventually was to scan the documents on site and then transfer the information over a LAN to optical drives at a clean or remote site. Again, there may be not be compatibility between the situations, but the decision-making process and options could have some applicability.
