Subject: cool-photohst
I am very pleased to announce that, by the kind permission of the PHOTOHST moderator, Richard Pearce-Moses, the archives of PHOTOHST are now available via WAIS in Conservation OnLine (CoOL). For a while, at least, the database will be updated monthly, when the ListServ Notebook for the month is complete. Later we may speed things up a bit. PHOTOHST is an unmoderated forum on the history and criticism of photography. Participants may share or request information on the following topics: biography of photographers/studios, interpretation of images, description of images, schools/styles/groups, genres. Discussion may include 19th and 20th century images. Participants may also wish to share information regarding relevant job announcements, exhibitions, publications, conferences, and grants. Reviews are welcome; please include a full citation. Participants are welcome to introduce other topics relevant to the principal focus of the list. Technical questions regarding the practice of photography (picture taking, darkroom techniques) are not appropriate for this list. PHOTO-L@XXXXX covers those topics. In general, cinema does not belong here; a variety of lists are dedicated to that topic. Participants include photo historians, archivists, curators, and others. Amateurs and professionals alike are welcome. Anyone is welcome to participate. For full documentation on CoOL and a list of Gopher sites that provide access to CoOL, send a note INFO COOL to waiscool [at] aldus__stanford__edu or, better yet, ftp to netcom.com and pick them up in the directory pub/whenry. If you need help using WAIS, Gopher, etc., please seek help from your local systems support staff.
