Subject: Advanced conservation workshops
University of IOWA Conservation Department announces 1994 Advanced conservation workshops Funding provided by The Andrew Mellon Foundation Mechanical and Aesthetic Considerations for Book Conservators Feb 21-25, 1994 Timothy Barrett, Barbara Meier-Husby, Pamela Spitzmueller - Leaders The care and detailing of a book conservation treatment affects its function, longterm appearance, and the longevity of repairs. We will examine previous book and paper treatments and observe the consequences of time, use, and human intervention. Focus will be on 2 areas 1. paper - fiber types and characteristics, paper mending, color choices and matching and 2. the re-establishment of book structure functions during repairs. Participants should bring examples of previous or older work of their own, if possible, and the lessons of experience. One day will be spent at the Oakdale Research and Papermaking Facility. Book Boards and Board Attachment April 18 - 22, 1994 Pamela Spitzmueller - Leader A historical overview of book board attachment will prepare participants for a survey of books with emphasis on materials and methods of attachment. Using a textblock sewn by participants before their arrival, we will explore lacing and/or other means of board attachment. Participants should bring books to work on which need board attachment. We will discuss current and experimental methods of board reattachment. The emphasis here, as in all UI Libraries workshops, is rare book treatments. Ms. Spitzmueller is the complier for the Boards section of the Book Conservation Catalog Compendium of the AIC Book and Paper Group and input from this group will be expected.
