Assistant Conservator/Rare Materials Brigham Young University Description This Assistant Conservator provides expert conservation treatment for rare books, manuscripts, archives and special collections. Under the direction of the head of the Conservation Laboratory, she/he examines, specifies, and performs a wide variety of treatment operations designed to preserve the historic, artifactual, and intrinsic value of materials, stabilize their condition, and protect them during storage and use. The Assistant Conservator may participate in survey projects involving special collections and in developing and implementing cost-effective conservation strategies for large artifact collections. He/she assists the Head of the Conservation Laboratory in the operation and maintenance of the Lab including specifying supplies and maintaining equipment, the supervision of conservation technicians, and in providing training to library personnel in conservation practices. Qualifications Three to five years experience in the practical and theoretical problems of book and paper conservation, demonstrated through any combination of formal and/or informal training experiences, apprenticeships, internships, or work experience. Preference will be given to applicants with actual work experience in a library conservation facility. Salary and Benefits Faculty status, generous insurance and retirement benefits. Salary is negotiable depending upon qualifications. This is a twelve-month appointment with twenty-two days annual leave and additional professional development time available. Application Deadline February 28, 1994 Assistant Conservator/Exhibitions and Rare Materials Brigham Young University Description Under the direction of the head of the Conservation Laboratory, the Assistant Conservator provides assistance with book, paper, and photographic conservation treatments and housings on rare materials from the Special Collections, including Rare Books, Manuscripts, and Archives. He/she organizes and carries out exhibition procedures, including: identification of items in need of conservation treatment before exhibition; monitoring environmental and lighting arrangements; and final mounting for exhibition of items from the Special Collections. In addition, this Assistant Conservator maintains expertise in all operations in the Book Repair Laboratory, working with the Head of Book Repair to coordinate efforts between Book Repair and the Conservation Laboratory.
